Property damage, repair or total loss?
Property damage claims are pretty straight forward. If the cost of repair is less than the value of the car, the car will be repaired. If the cost of repair is more than value of the car, then the car will be declared a total loss. If your car is declared a total loss, you will need to arrive at an agreement as to value of the car at the time of the accident. The Value will be based on the blue book value considering the condition, equipment and mileage of the vehicle. There are many resources on the web that can assist you in determining the value of your car. I generally advise clients to check the Friday Washington Post as the used car ads are usually found on Fridays. Try to find a car which matches your vehicle in terms of condition, equipment and mileage, and you will have a good idea as to cost to replace your car with a similar vehicle. This might be some of the best evidence you can find as to the value of your total loss.
