I was just involved in an auto accident and the automobile insurance company for the responsible driver sent me a medical release. Should I sign it?
No. There is no reason to give the insurance company a blanket medical release. Such a release would allow the insurance company to request copies of your birth records, if they thought that it would help them pay less on your claim. No matter what they might say, the automobile insurance company for the responsible driver is not trying to help you. The only purpose to get you to sign a medical release at an early stage is so they can try to find out about your medical history before a lawyer enters the picture and revokes their release.
It might appear that I am just a tad bit skeptical of the motives of insurance companies, but you must understand that I have been dealing with insurance companies for over 24 years, and I know what I can expect from them.
Do yourself a favor, do not sign the medical release. Get your own medical records and send them to the insurance company. Better yet, hire a competent lawyer to do it for you.
